History Heading

The scenic beauty of the road was first officially recognized in 1971 when the State of California designated the route as the Ebbetts Pass State Scenic Highway. In 2001, the Calaveras Council of Governments initiated the process to apply for National Scenic Byway status for the Ebbetts Pass highway. Funded by U.S. Forest Service grants, the COG worked collaboratively with individuals, community groups, and agencies in Calaveras and Alpine counties to develop a comprehensive Corridor Management Plan (CMP) for the Ebbetts Pass corridor. Completed in 2004, the CMP provides the vision, goals and management recommendations for protecting and enhancing the Ebbetts Pass National Scenic Byway for generations to come.

Ebbetts Pass was honored with National Scenic Byway status by the Federal Highway Administration, U.S Department of Transportation, on September 22, 2005. Now one of only seven national scenic byways in California, Ebbetts Pass joins an elite group of 125 designated byways in the United States.
